One of the most important exponents of the Sri Vaishnavism tradition within Hinduism, Sri Ramanuja (c. 1017CE-1137 CE) was born was born into a Tamil Brahmin community, in a village called Sriperumbudur in present-day Tamil Nadu. His philosophical foundations for devotionalism were influential to the Bhakti movement. Ramanuja has appeal for many in India because he did not promote caste, giving more weight to the emotions. It is said that Ramanuja is responsible for India's re-discovery of her Vedic spiritual self.
