Descent of the Goddess at Shihar

The Holy Mother, Sri Sarada Devi, was born at Shihar village in 1853. Tradition has it that the Mother of the Universe herself chose to announce her birth in the home of Shyamasundari Devi, assuming the most ordinary guise of Shyamasundari’s daughter. Concerning this advent of the Goddess, Sri Sarada Devi herself said,

I am that eternal Adyashakti, the Mother of the Universe. I have come only out of compassion for the world. I have come in every age and I will come again.
