Noted author and playwright Christopher Isherwood spoke a number of times at the temples of the Vedanta Society of Southern California. Normally, he would only read from the lectures of Swami Vivekananda.
But there was one talk the he would give himself on Girish Ghosh, Sri Ramakrishna's celebrated disciple and actor. Chris felt an affinity with Girish, who was one of the few subjects he was comfortable to talk about in the temple venue.
Girish lived a wild life, once bragging that if he took the bottles of alcohol he had drunk, they would stretch to the moon and back. Although drawn to Ramakrishna, Girish told him that he couldn't practice any spiritual disciplines.
It's a fun story skillfully told by one of England's most famous novelists, and author of "Berlin Stories."
